Every client is different, just as every person is different. They have different wants and needs for their company's image. I'm sure we've all heard the phrase "The client is always right!" Well, in my business, that's not the case. Yes, I have to take into consideration their wants and needs - but ultimately, it's what their clients wants or needs. One of the main issues that I deal with on a daily basis is that my clients don't fully understand their clients. They get hung up on what they think their image should be - but they don't take the necessary time to find out what their customers or clients look for in their website. It's the most important tool you have for your business and you need to use it to it's full potential.

I started my business in 2006 after a two year spread of obtaining my A+ certification and Network+ certification and multiple certifications in web development. Combining my skills with a background in Psychology, my business was taking off not long after it was created. I'm also proud to say that my business operates almost entirely on referrals. I didn't want to run my business like so many others have done before me. I am a firm believer in giving clients all the information they need before making a decision to work with you. They should be fully informed of what they will be getting before spending a penny. My company offers the client an initial consultation (where information is gathered from the client regarding their company, likes/dislikes, their expectations and an understanding of their target market) - from there I create 3 custom designs to review with explanations of how it will all work. This is all done free of charge. It is then up to the client if they want to engage in a project with me.

Project turn around times vary - however, since I work mainly with small and medium-sized businesses, the turn around time is much quicker than engaging with larger website firms. With them, you're looking at months to years of development. With me, you're looking at weeks to a few months.

In my business, I get to pick and choose what clients I take on. It's definitely not the other way around. I charge a flat fee per page so that the client knows exactly what they will be paying for the project in addition to offering software solutions that have flat fees. Other website firms charge by the hour or charge outrageous fees for implementing functionality and software.

With my company, the client gets the total package. They get to choose to pay for the project and decide whether or not they want to continue maintenance afterwards, who they host with and who their webmaster is. I don't hold them to any contracts after the project is completed - meaning, even if they choose to use my hosting services, it's month to month and they can leave at any time. The same goes with webmaster services, it's month to month.

How did I get to be interested in working with websites and computers?

When I was young, my grandfather brought us one of those old Macintosh computers that took up the entire desk. He was always curious to find out how things worked and we would often see him elbows deep in a computer case. His interest in figuring out how to make things work sparked my curiosity. My generation takes computers for granted. If you ask any young person today how to fix a computer, build a website or do anything technical, they could probably show you how to do it, or just do it for you. But they were never taught the in's and out's of a computer... they just know the short-cuts to things but don't understand WHY they work the way they do. I wanted to know! So when I got my first real job at a school district maintaining computers in a computer lab, in addition to instructing students how to use them, it hit me that this is what I wanted to do; something with computers.

I started taking courses in computer repair, which lead to web development and ultimately to starting my own business. It was my grandfather who set me on this path (without even realizing it). His motto was "If you don't know how to do something, get a book, learn it and figure it out on your own... don't let someone else show you or do it for you!" This outlook made me respect myself more for being smart enough to figure these things out on my own. Web development involves this in many cases. If I don't already know how to do it, I read about it and do it on my own. You learn the why's and not just the how's of how things work.
